Teacher Preparation

How well the teacher is prepared impacts the level of engagement and effectiveness of the lesson. It is worth taking the time to be ready to facilitate a class in a manner that creates a hunger to learn and results in transformation.

Scriptural Overview:
This study focuses on the Gospel of Mark. It is recommended that you:
1.
Read the entire Gospel before the lessons commence.
2.
Read the weekly Scripture references.
Lesson Overview:
It is recommended that you skim over the entire lesson for an overall knowledge of the different components of the lesson. This gives a general understanding of all the aspects and necessary preparation, especially the objectives for each lesson.

An understanding of the video clips is of particular importance. Before the first lesson, watch the entire LUMO film of the Gospel of Mark. Afterwards, and while preparing to teach, watch the specific clips as assigned in the lessons. Watching the clips before the lesson will enable you to be prepared for any questions or clarifications that might arise during the lesson.

Each lesson has a designated LUMO video clip from the Gospel of Mark. Where electrical power is needed, ensure you know where the power source is and that you have extension cables available.

Students should always have their Bibles and notebooks for reference and taking notes during the lessons. All Scripture quotations in this guide are taken from the Anglicised New International Version (NIVUK) (2011).

Getting Ready to Teach

Prepare to facilitate the lesson by:
1.
Reading God’s Word daily.
2.
Praying for the students and the lesson delivery.
3.
Preparing all the items that will be required for the lesson.
4.
Informing other team members early enough about their roles.
5.
Having a heart that is encouraging, patient, and tuned in to the Holy Spirit.

Managing the Class

1.
Be a guide, not a preacher. Allow most of the contributions to come from the students as you gently guide them towards the truth in God’s Word.
2.
Ensure all are involved. Prompt the quiet ones to speak up and nudge the talkative ones to give others a chance to share.
3.
Keep the class focused. Watch out for banter, arguments, and side conversations.
4.
Manage time well. Start and end on time.
5.
Encourage teamwork. Delegate assignments to your team members and the students.
6.
Be friendly, warm, and approachable.

Lesson Day

1.
Get to class at least 30 minutes early.
2.
Rearrange the class, if needed. (Where possible, have a u-shape or semi-circle formation.)
3.
Ensure necessary materials/items for the class are ready.
4.
Confirm that the video plays properly and that the volume is audible to the farthest seat.
5.
Welcome the students warmly as they enter the class.
6.
Determine in advance how the small groups shall be formed.
7.
Respond to questions and for those that require further research, defer them andanswer them in the next lesson. Alternatively, respond to an individual student off thelesson time.

Class Requirements for the Students

1.
Attend the class on time.
2.
Bring a Bible, notebook, and pencil.
3.
Participate in small group discussions.
4.
Be ready to learn.
WELCOME & REVIEW
Always keep the class friendly and warm. Make an effort to remember and refer to each student by name.

Review is the bridge between the previous lesson and the current one. It helps students recall what they have learnt and share experiences related to the lesson. Each review should be brief and participatory.
INTRODUCTION
The introductory part of each lesson contains the title of the lesson as well as questions or illustrations to introduce it.
VIDEO CLIP
The video is an integral part of the lesson. Ensure that the sound is audible and the picture clear for everyone. If time allows at the end of the small group discussion, ask the students what their favourite part of the video was and why.
SMALL GROUPS
Guidelines for small group discussions:
1.
Determine in advance where the small groups shall meet and who shall lead the discussions.
2.
Students should be encouraged to freely participate in the discussions.
3.
Students should be encouraged to bring their Bibles, notebooks, and pencils.
4.
Discussions should be managed carefully to encourage the participation of allthe students.
5.
Each group should write down the key points for class presentation. (If students are dismissed immediately after the small group discussion, the group leader should wrap up the discussion.)
Several discussion questions can be found in this part of the lesson. These questions have been added to increase biblical knowledge in each student as they recall relevant information that enhances their learning.

The lessons include rhetorical questions. These provoke the students to think more about the specific content of the lesson or focus their minds on key issues contained in the video clips. While you shall read them out, the students do not have to answer them during the lesson.

APPLICATION

Once the small group discussion is over, the students may regroup for final thoughts and dismissal.

Each small group shall be required to give a brief highlight of their discussions. If the groups are many, pick a few and keep alternating in subsequent lessons until all are covered. Application questions that further help the students understand the topic and apply it in their lives are also included at this point in the lesson.

REFLECTION

At the end of each lesson, give the students a reflective question/statement. This will help them remember what they have learnt and relate it to real life. Encourage them to journal their thoughts regularly.

For all reflection questions, read it out loud or copy it on the board and ask the students to write it down in their notebooks.
PRAYER
End every lesson with a word of prayer. You can either do this or ask a volunteer to pray. If the students conclude the lesson in the small groups, inform the group leaders that they should wrap up the session, share the reflection with the students, and close with prayer.

Suggested prayer for new believers:
When students willingly choose to follow Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour, you can pray the following prayer with them or modify it without losing its essence:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for loving me. I confess that I am a sinner. I ask you to forgive me and make me your child. Today, I receive you into my heart. I will follow and obey you. Help me to remain committed to you for the rest of my life. In your name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for specific needs:
When students share their prayer needs, pray for them at the end of the lesson. If a prayer item requires further follow up or counsel, meet with the student later and provide spiritual guidance.
